Day 2 - Accomplishemnts

Day two was manageable with 4 less children in the home. I pulled out the book What Your 3rd Grader Needs to Know and read out loud to my daughter, Aladdin. The day before, I had underlined many words in the story that I thought would be unfamiliar to her. On Day 2 I told her that those underlined words would be her spelling and vocabulary words. The words were fetch, innocent, widow, flames, burst, cuffed, reveal, descend, garment, niche, and moral. I looked up the definitions with her in Webster and simplified or abbreviated them as I dictated them to her. She complained that her hand hurt after writing down 6. She said her public school teacher let her finish work the next day and even take it home if she didn’t finish it the next day. I told her that she was welcome to sit at the table as long as she wanted until it was done. We finished 10 minutes later. I felt so accomplished; 3 subjects from one story! I was beginning to feel a tad bit less overwhelmed with homeschooling.

  1. Sarah you seem to be approaching this well. Quite the juggle you have going there! I enjoyed reading how things went, sounds somewhat familiar with Nat homeschooling our 3!

    A word of advice: don't kill yourself by trying too many things at one time. Another thing you might consider that can help lessen your busy schedule is to continue homeschooling through the summer with a lighter subject load. This accomplishes quite a few great things. The first being that even if you take a few breaks a year from homeschooling to go on trips or vacations, your kids still attend school close to 2 months longer a year than public school kids! The second thing this accomplishes that Nat loves is that she does not spend the first 6 to 8 weeks of each school year reviewing and re-teaching everything from the previous school year and the kids do not have to adjust to the new schedule each fall.

Re-read my comment and realized that I did not explain the best thing about homeschooling during the summer: Nat can and does concentrate on just a few key subject areas for extended periods of time. When she has completed one of those focus subjects she can then pick up 2 or 3 smaller subjects again such as handwriting skills, increasing reading time, or just spend a little more time on math, science, history, etc.
